The newest Windows operating system from Microsoft, Windows Server 2008 R2 is designed to reduce cost and increase efficiency through enhanced management control of the resources of an enterprise. Use of this upgrade can reduce power consumption, improve branch office capability, offer new remote access experiences, streamline server management and expand the virtualization strategy offered by Microsoft for client and server computers. It is a move towards a 64-bit architecture.
There are CPU specific enhancements that expand CPU support, enabling clients to use 256 logical processors. Also, it offers support for Second Level Translation, so you can take advantage of Enhanced Page Tables provided by the latest AMD CPUs or the Nested Page Tables in the latest processors from Intel. These features offer a better memory management.
The utilization level of the processors is monitored, while the processor performance is dynamically adjusted so that it limits power according to the needs of the workload. Although there was a certain amount of control for power management in the earlier version, this new version offers more accurate control and greater savings.
The remote administration is improved and includes the Server Manager which can be installed remotely. Through the updated and easy-to-use Active Directory Domain Services and Federated Services you can fully benefit from the improved identity management features.
PowerShell new version includes over 240 new pre-built cmdlets and a new GUI interface with which you can create new cmdlets. Coloured syntax, new production script debugging capacity and testing tools are added.
Storage volume is increased, and IT administrators can use the tools in the new File Classification Infrastructure. An extensible and automated classification mechanism can be built on top of shared file architectures. You can direct actions for certain files using a completely customizable classification.
The new type of connectivity offered by Windows Server 2008 R2 is called DirectAccess and it enables users to access resources without traditional VPN connection and client software. Management wizards allow administrators to configure SSTP and IPv6 with R2 and Windows 7 clients, enabling DirectAccess connection, which is enhanced with management and security tools. DirectAccess considers that all users are remote all the time.
There is no distinction between local and remote connections, they are handled in the background while administrators maintain access control and perimeter security, while desktop security is ensured. All the separate GUI collected in one interface based on PowerShell offered in the new Active Directory Administration Centre is one of the best features of this new version.
Terminal Services allow you to run an application in one location, and control it in another. This feature is renamed Terminal Services to Remote Desktop Services and will help you build more robust access. The Remote App and Desktop Connections is a set of resources which offers the possibility of connecting to resources from Vista or XP and Windows 7.
Finally, the new Windows Server Backup utility has been upgraded and includes support for system state operations. It is optimized and runs faster using less disk space..
