CCNA stands for Cisco Certified network associate and is a Cisco Career Certification. The certification validates whether the standard of the test taker’s ability to install, configure and troubleshoot switched networks is upto standards set by CISCO or not. It also tests the ability of the test taker to set up remote connections to WAN. All in all it allows engineers to move into the network domain with the approval of Cisco. This allows engineers to be network associates or network administrators at the mainstream job market.
The CCNA is composed of 2 parts Interconnecting Cisco networking devices 1 (ICND1) and Interconnecting Cisco networking devices 2(ICND2). ICND 1 teaches a professional who intends to enter the networking domain to interconnect small subsets of office network and troubleshoot the same. This would entail the basics of WAN , basic security and basics of TCP/IP. This also has concepts of cross platform routing which are not necessarily proprietary to Cisco but can be used over a wide range of network providers. It also uses TCP/IP and OSI model to configure IP addresses, in using WAN technologies and to configure Input/output devices at the physical layer. Clearing this portion of the CCNA is equivalent to clearing the Cisco certified entry network technician(CCENT). It is common practice to include this is in one’s business card as well.
Passing scores of this exam are decided by a statistical analysis at the back end in Cisco and are therefore subject to change; hence exam passing scores are never revealed. The passing score for a given exam will be given at the end of the exam with the breakdown of the test takers individual section scores. This is will help the test taker understand what the exam was testing and where he was found lacking.
CCNA also offers a suite of concentrations which test the individual’s ability in voice, security and wireless. The voice concentration also called CCNA voice evaluates the test takers ability to administer a voice core network, or a network which has voice as it payload. It results in positions like Voice Administrator, Voice Engineer etc. These require the set of skills validated by the CCNA voice so it is a necessary certification if the test taker aspires for such roles. It also evaluates the skill of the test taker in VoIP and IP PBX as also with IP telephony handset, call control and voicemail solutions.
CCNA wireless is a certification designed to evaluate the ability of an individual to manage wireless LAN(WLAN) networks . However this is more specific to the Cisco network than a generic certification unlike the previous suite. The certification aims to prepare the individual to manage a basic network with troubleshooting abilities in the Cisco architecture. It enables individual to configure Cisco WLANs between small and medium size networks to enterprise architectures.
CCNA security evaluates the ability of an individual to provide security to Cisco networks and thereby ensures the individual can develop a security infrastructure for Cisco networks. The aim of the security would be to maintain integrity, confidentiality and availability of network resources (data and devices). It also means to ensure the competency in the technology that Cisco uses to maintain its security infrastructure.
